As COVID-19 illness continues to affect our daily lives, getting tested for the virus–and receiving quick and accurate results–is so important. If you think you need a COVID test, you can get one at our urgent care center in King, NC. Here is what you can expect from the testing process.
Decide What Kind of COVID-19 Test You Need
At Cardinal Urgent Care, we offer rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 illness. These quick, nasal swab tests deliver results in 15 minutes. They determine if you are actively ill. They also screen you if you wish to travel or need to visit high-risk environments, such as hospitals or nursing homes.
If you are actively ill or think you have been exposed to COVID-19 infection, get a PCR antigen test. These tests are more sensitive to the virus, and therefore, they are more accurate.
However, PCR antigen tests do require lab processing. So, your test results may take a few days. It is recommended that you self-isolate at home until you know your results.
What to Do Before You Leave Home for Your COVID-19 Test
Avoid smoking, eating or drinking for at least one hour before your COVID-19 test. Be sure you have a mask, your photo ID and your insurance card with you.
If you wish, you may call our urgent care center in King, NC, to tell us of your arrival time, or schedule an appointment on our website. However, you also may simply come in during our regular business hours. We are fully staffed seven days a week and can administer your test quickly and comfortably.

Getting the COVID-19 Test
Our trained medical professionals will administer the COVID-19 test in one of our treatment rooms. For rapid antigen tests, a nasal swab will be taken and processed right away. For PCR antigen tests, a sample will be collected in the same way, but results will not be available quickly. You will be told what the likely wait time is for your results. You can access them through our easy-to-use patient portal.
While waiting for your test results, it is important to continue following all social distancing guidelines and wear a mask in public. If possible, limit contact with other people until your test results come back.
If Your COVID-19 Test Results Are Positive…
If your COVID-19 test comes back positive, our staff will tell you what to do next. You should also contact your primary care physician, particularly if you are a senior or if you have underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or asthma.
Remember, there are treatment options for COVID-19 illness. They include rest, drinking plenty of fluids and taking over-the-counter medications to reduce fever and muscle aches. Your doctor may also prescribe antiviral medication or other treatments, depending on your symptoms and your overall health.
